Was Once My Home

Last month on the 14th while I was still staying with the folks in Ohio, I had some errands to run in town. I decided to take a couple hours to get out and wander, so I scooped up my SX10 and off I went.

This was the first house we lived at in Ohio, when we moved from Pikeville, Kentucky when I was just five. When we lived in it, the bottom half of the house was painted chocolate brown.

Since Mount Union bought the house, it has been used as some kind of campus office/s. There used to be a small garage behind the house, with a small workshop attached, where my da kept his metal working tools. Now it is small car lot. Shame.

My brother, sister and I played here just behind the house. There's always been this little path back behind the houses, it's how all the neighborhood children used to get around, on foot or bike.

Across the street is Mount Union College's campus. I used to see it every morning from these windows.

Just down the street on campus is the college's performing arts building, where we had piano lessons and recitals as kids.

Down the street the other way is Parkway Elementary, where I walked to and from school from kindergarten through second grade. It's hardly changed from the outside.

The town library has hardly changed at all in all the years I've known it. Several of the same librarians that checked out my books when I had no front teeth and a pixie cut are still there today.

We used to walk our dogs to this little grassy spot on the west side of the block, three doors down from the old house. They've put up landscaped flowers and a sentimentally overdone lawn chair. I stopped there for a few minutes to meditate. Then I drove home to Bowman Road.

A Full Rich Day

Father's Day, June 20th. We (my da, my ma, my Aunt Jackie, and I) went over to Wooster for a Father's Day dinner with some family friends that evening last month here. It had been a busy, get up and go day on the farm. I rode some horses and gave them each a bath. Jackie had fun breaking in the new tiller.

My parental units. Cute, eh?

My da's profile.

Family and friends and food.

I had a grilled chicken with avocado sammich on divine homemade multigrain bread, with homemade chips. I was pretty full, but couldn't resist trying the Bananas Foster. Num num!

Peaceful dusk from my bedroom window. In the lane of tall pines on the east side of the house, the wind made sounds like the sea in sand. And from the pond nearby, came the bullfrogs' deep, slow, bass voices.

My mother's familiar, Elfine (elf-EEN) knows what pillows are for and has no qualms about stealing mine.

Good night!

Sweet dreams, Elfie!

July 4th

We spent the red, white and blue holiday with John's family in Golden. It was so nice of them to have us and they were a clan of sweet people. There were babies, puppies, and sparkly fire hazards. Meet Brooklyn! I wanted to just nibble on those little cheeks!

Little Gracie was the energetic shi tzu. She was on clean up duty when a hot dog was dropped, inspected the fence when the neighbor's dog barked, and was available whenever someone needed a dog to pet. What a trooper!

Tuffy was the elderly poodle mix. You could tell he'd done this before, he knew where to be when the food was going around.

Whee!

Get a load of this little playhouse. I couldn't get a good front on pic of it, but you get the idea. So stinkin' cute, with little flower boxes, little shingles on the roof, a little dutch door, little window shutters, and even a little weathervane! ^-^

I made fruit kebabs (not an actual recipe, but the secret to fresh fruit kebabs is lemon juice and at least an hour chilling in the fridge!) and walnut brownies for the shindig. I cheated and used boxed mix (so no recipe here either!) to save time. But for the record, it was Ghirardelli chocolate.

It was a good time and fun to meet new people. John's mother and father, Denise and John Sr., are going to have us down to Colorado Springs sometime, and Romeo is welcome too. The rain didn't stop some people from busting out the big fireworks, and we could see most of the finale from a local park from our deck when we got home. Romeo was so hysterical from all the loud noises that I gave him some melatonin hidden in a piece of cheese and he snored when he slept.

A Summer Day's Indoor Gardening

The weekend went by very fast. Saturday I repotted all my plants, which include mostly veggies and herbs, and one poor little pansy plant that I haven't taken good care of. It stormed off and on, the clouds looked like sheep fleeces.

The spearmint got the big blue pot, I hope it takes off with all that room.

The same with my sage.

The tomatoes are still blight free, but I'm hoping they'll be okay if I leave them on the deck. They're temperamental, but I'll be happy if I just get one tiny fruit from each plant.

My poor pepper plant is a runt, but he's so teeny and cute!

Butterleaf lettuce and bok choy.

Three different kinds of basil. That's right, because you can never have too much homegrown basil. (Especially when it's your bun's favorite herbal snack.)

The Daily Coyote

I wanted to stop and share one of my favorite blog sites, The Daily Coyote. Shreve seems like a very kindred spirit. So do Charlie and the other critters that live with her. I haven't read her book yet, but it's on my list!

Some random ramblings, music, and a recipe

What a day for daydreaming. I had a good one folks, hope you did too. I'm restless to get back to Ohio, I'm already looking forward to it. I made squash risotto for dinner. It was yummy. I LOVE arborio rice! Depending on what you cook it with, it can be a meal in itself. I loosely followed this recipe for liquid measurements, and then pretty much did what I wanted on the rest of it. I used fresh sage for the first time off my indoor plant, yay! And I used more lemon juice than it called for, skipped the salt and cheese altogether. I had two lovely and very ripe and very beautiful green and yellow and orange acorn squash, which I forgot to take pictures of. D'oh! Here are the rinds though. I feel ashamed of just tossing them, this is where chickens would come in handy. This would be a chicken feast!

We had a fab time at back to back Tool concerts at Red Rocks earlier this week. But I wasn't allowed to bring my camera in. And the security people were HARSH: if they caught someone taking a pic with their phone, they'd mark the person on the hands as a first warning. We watched it happen to two different couples near us. Laaaame. Maynard's such a tool. (Ah ha ha ha, I'm a nerd.)

I made a boo boo when saving the pics from the Peacemakers concert we went to in Ft. Collins at the end of May. In my defense, I'd been drinking tequila and apparently thought that made a great time to edit the pics on my camera. Oops. Oh well, here's what survived that episode:

A neat little indie shop we stopped at.

A sweet poster inside the venue.

The venue was the Aggie Theatre. Roger and the band were running an hour late! But when their van passed the line out front, everyone cheered. I don't like crowds in general, but when it's a crowd of people grooving to music (or about to be grooving), then I'm not bothered. There's something pretty spiritual about crowds like that. I'd give every tooth in my head to have caught Woodstock. Le sigh.

It was a pretty day, there was color everywhere. Sometimes you have to really look for it, in the city. But it's there, wild and landscaped.

Roger's a hunk. Wish I hadn't drunkenly ERASED the sweet video I took of him and the band. Oh well, check this one out:

I'm off to finish the chapter I'm reading and hit the hay. Sweet dreams!

UPDATE: Christine's recipe looks fab too!
